In 1978, the S. C. Highway Department dedicated the new bridge on Chestnut Street in honor of A. I. (Gus) Mason, longtime civic leader, theater operator, and Rotarian. Gus served as Sergeant-at-Arms of Laurens Rotary for almost 30 years and is remembered for his gag gift Christmas parties and his colorful inductions of new Rotarians. "You didn't choose Rotary," Gus would say to the inductees. "Rotary chose you!"
In this picture, Gus' widow Etta Lee looks on as grandson, and namesake, Gus Dixon unveils the monument.
